abstract = "Many times, the same volume of precipitation causes different
answers from the river, possibly associate to the irregular
distribution of the rains in time and space. This study
investigates the hypothesis that a detailed characterization of
the precipitation in flood events can help to obtain more
accurately a hydrological response of the rivers. The objective of
this research is to examine the influence of spatial and temporal
distribution of rains on floods recorded at a fluviometric
station, located on the downstream portion of the watershed of the
Sinos river, RS, through the use of geoprocessing tools available
in GIS. Hydrological data of ANA and SRTM data, elevation model
provided by NASA, were used. Fifteen extreme flood events
presented at Campo Bomīs fluviometric station (station with the
historical data series more complete) were selected. From this
selection, rainfall levels were recorded in six of these events,
those that presented the most complete rainfall data for analysis.
Then, rain surfaces for each one of these events in the watershed
were generaded. The analysis to characterize the rains was
performed based on generated rainfall surfaces (spatial
distribution) and on extracted variables, among them daily
statistics of average rainfall (rain volume comparison between the
events) and standard deviation (comparison of the rains temporal
distribution). From the spatial and temporal analysis of rain were
identified areas of the watershed and temporal distribution
patterns that contribute most to the flooding in the downstream
portion of the watershed.",
